A Michelin-Inspired Journey of Authentic North Indian Cuisine in Ottawa

Biren Patel is the Founder and Owner-Operator of The Saffron Indian Restaurant & Bar, a restaurant recognized by many guests for serving some of the best Indian food in Ottawa. He grew up in Ahmedabad, a city where food is deeply connected to culture, family, and everyday life. This upbringing shaped his appreciation for bold spices, traditional recipes, and the joy of sharing meals with others.

While completing his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biren discovered his entrepreneurial spirit by co-founding a phone accessories business with high school friends through Instagram, which sparked his interest in building something of his own. In 2017, he moved to Montreal to pursue a Master of Engineering at Concordia University. Like many international students, he worked multiple shifts at a downtown pizza shop, beginning with late-night closing duties and gradually moving into the kitchen to assist with food preparation, main dishes, and busy service hours. What started as a necessity slowly became a passion, and seeing guests enjoy their meals inspired his dream of creating a restaurant known for authentic food and genuine hospitality.

After graduating in 2019, Biren joined Rio Tinto, one of the world’s largest mining companies. There, he led large multimillion-dollar Automation and Control System projects, including converting an entire site from PLC-5 to ControlLogix systems. Through this experience, he developed discipline, precision, and consistency—values that later shaped how he built and operates Saffron today.

The Birth of Saffron — A Calculated Leap of Faith

When the idea first came to Biren, he shared it with his family. With their extensive experience in business, their guidance meant a great deal to him. They spent hours discussing the vision — the opportunity in Ottawa, the potential to create something truly special, and the kind of restaurant experience they wanted to build. To his surprise and excitement, the idea immediately resonated with them. They didn’t just support the vision — they took it a step further. They told him that if he was willing to leave his engineering career and fully commit to the dream, they would invest alongside him to bring it to life. That moment changed everything. Together, they invested their hard-earned savings and turned that vision into reality — The Saffron Indian Restaurant & Bar.
